This ring was hand sculpted in Blender, rigging a human model and posing them around a digital finger model. Setting up a ring model this way using digital sculpting tools is pretty standard in the jewelry industry, but this ring is unique for a number of reasons, and requires specialty design treatment when it comes to sizing for a vast range of finger sizes. If you watched the smart sizing and parametric sizing videos on this page and have been thinking ahead, you may realize that it would be impossible at this stage to just digitally sculpt a single ring design that we could simply scale larger or smaller to fit different people. When we start to consider two ring sizes for each finger, while having a ring where each half is dependent on the geometry of the other to have a smooth hinging motion, the variable relationship between multiple ring sizes becomes a creative problem that needs a creative solution. By offering sizes between 0-13 for each position size #1 & size #2, we have 27 size options per band. That gives us 729 permutations (27*27) of size combinations, which would be insanely tedious to hand sculpt each size combination, not to mention human-error, so we need a better solution! Many of our designers have backgrounds in engineering and computational design, so we were able to write code to create a custom software tool to assist us in creating rings to fit every one of these ring size combinations all automatically! If you saw the parametric sizing video, you can see that we are using the design software Grasshopper to script our own in-house workflow to morph each ring to the exact size combo that the customer requests, which allows us to streamline our digital workflow while also maintaining the perfect movement between each of the ring segments when you bend your finger! After we generate the perfect digital model, we send this file to our manufacturer here in central London, who 3D prints each ring in a jeweler grade wax resin- the resin tree is prepared for investment casting, silver is then poured into the mold, and they give the final casting back to us for final cleaning! Once back in our studio, we remove any remnants of the casting sprue, file down the silver and polish to a final shiny finish!
